Project Overview

RoSpot is our community map of Romanian places in the United States. Anyone can open the app and find Romanian restaurants, shops, churches, historic sites, and services nearby, without creating an account. Signed-in users can add new places and events, which appear publicly after review. The app is available on Google Play and the App Store, and the companion website at rospot.app links to both.

The Challenge

A community map is only useful if people trust what is on it and can add what is missing. The app needed to be open for browsing, simple for contributing, and protected from spam and inaccurate listings. It also had to work for two audiences at once: Romanian speakers who prefer the app in Romanian and their families and neighbors who read English. Shipping on both iPhone and Android meant meeting the review requirements of both stores, including sign-in options, privacy disclosures, and in-app account deletion.

Our Approach

We built one React Native codebase with Expo for iOS and Android, so both platforms share the same features and release together. Every submission goes into a moderation queue before it becomes public, and database rules decide what each user can read and change. The visual design is based on the cross-stitch patterns of a Romanian ie blouse, drawn in code, so the interface feels familiar to the community and stays sharp on every screen size.

The Solution

RoSpot includes a map and a list of places with category filters for historic sites, food and drink, and services; place pages with photos, directions, and a call button; and an Events tab for dated community happenings with Add to calendar. Users can sign in with email, Google, or Apple, submit places and events, edit their own submissions, report a problem, and delete their account from the app. The full interface is available in Romanian and English. Supabase provides authentication, the database, photo storage, and email alerts for new submissions, and Sentry reports crashes.

Results

RoSpot is live on Google Play and the App Store and is launching in Metro Detroit through local churches and community groups. The project demonstrates our work across native mobile development, moderated community content, multilingual interfaces, maps and location features, and the release process for both app stores.
